What is cold process soap?

Cold process soap is the process of mixing oils/fats/butters with water or other liquids and lye. Mixing lye with these ingredients causes a chemical reaction called saponification. Saponification is the process in which fats turn to soap. Pretty cool stuff huh?

Will there be lye in my soap?

No, the lye neutralizes within the first 48 hours of the soap being made and is completely gone once the soap has finished curing.

Why is lye used to make soap?

Lye is a necessary ingredient in soap making. "Real" soap cannot be made without lye.

What is curing and why is it necessary?

Curing is the process of allowing the soap to sit in a space that is preferably humidity-free so the soap can completely saponify, harden, lose excess moisture, and become milder and gentler on the skin. The average curing time is 4-6 weeks or longer, depending upon the recipe used and personal preference.

How should I store my soap?

Store your soap in a draining soap dish and keep away from puddles or direct streams of water.
